Where the castle stands in Finisterre

Castelo de San Carlos stands at Praza de América, beside Finisterre’s harbor area in Fisterra. Its position on rocky ground shaped both its irregular outline and its role in defending the Ría de Corcubión.

The Concello de Fisterra gives the castle’s address as Praza de América s/n, 15155 Fisterra. The waterfront setting makes it easy to connect the fort with a walk around the harbor, while the museum inside adds context on the working life of the coast.

How did Castelo de San Carlos become a defensive fort?

How did Castelo de San Carlos become a defensive fort?

Castelo de San Carlos was built as part of an eighteenth-century plan to defend the Ría de Corcubión. The project also included Castelo do Príncipe in Ameixenda, Cee, and Castelo do Cardeal in Corcubión.

Construction began under engineers Demaur and Exaccha. Early work involved laying out and levelling the site, setting stone-and-clay foundations on rock, and building part of a wall. The castle was completed ten years after work began, by order of Carlos III.

During the French assault on Fisterra in the Peninsular War, the castle was burned and damaged. It later had three fronts and an interior nave containing an officer’s quarters, barracks and powder magazine. The central nave was subsequently renovated, and the castle was restored.

The castle’s irregular shape follows the rocky ground beneath it, giving the exterior a form shaped by the site rather than a regular plan. Inside, the Museo da Pesca presents a small exhibition about fishing in Galicia and maritime life.

The museum’s exhibits cover fishing gear and practices in Galicia. That makes the visit a concise way to connect the fort’s defensive history with the fishing traditions of the coast. The collection focuses on the subjects explored in the Museo da Pesca in Finisterre post.

The collection opened to visitors on 4 November 2006. For a compact visit, you can pair the museum with time outside along the harbor; the museum’s hours leave a break between its morning and afternoon opening on most days.

How can you pair the castle with a harbor walk?

Start at the castle and museum, then continue along the harborfront to see the waterfront setting that connects the fort with Fisterra’s maritime history. The castle visit and a harbor walk work naturally together because the fort stands beside the harbor area.

A one-day walking route through Finisterre places the castle within a wider town itinerary.

From Hotel Áncora Finisterre, the castle is about a six-minute walk, making it straightforward to include on foot while exploring town.

The Museo Marítimo Seno de Corcubión offers another maritime-focused stop in the area.
